* Preparing to Depart Sweden (June 4 – June 21, 2024)

Taking Care of Business We ended up spending a week at Brodernas Martinsson boatyard getting an engine service done and a few items installed (life raft, engine mount, large fire extinguisher). It was rainy and windy much of the time we were there, so we stayed longer than planned (didn’t want to head out in […]

We’ve been tracking our movements for a while now, but users would have to go the Garmin site to see the tracking map. Today we added a page to SailHokukea blog that has an embeded tracking map, without having to leave the blog. Click on “Map” on the menu at the top of any page

Lango After Grebbestad, we made one more stop on our way back to Ellös and the Hallberg-Rassy boatyard. We chose Lango Harbor because it was a fjord-like harbor that looked well-protected. It also had 5 mooring balls belonging to the Swedish Cruising Association (we are members and can use the moorings). It was a beautiful

Nyckelbykilen Having stayed in marinas in small towns for a bit, we thought it was time to anchor in a more remote setting as we continued on our way north towards Fredrikstad, Norway. We reviewed our sailing guides and found a very well protected anchorage in a fjord-like area where the land/rocks were covered in

On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, we departed Ellös for Fredrikstad, Norway (72 nm north of Ellös) with various stops along the way–stops that we decided upon the previous night. Our only agenda is to get to Fredrikstad by early next week to export the boat by documenting that we left Sweden. Exporting the boat saves

* Stretching Our Wings (May 14, 2024)

On Friday, MJ and I spread our wings and left the dock. We only motored a few hundred meters, docking at a new spot, but for us it felt like a significant event – we did it ourselves and suffered no damages. It kind of faded from our view though, when we were hit by

* Not Leaving Ellös Quite Yet… (May 10, 2024)

2 Comments / Season 1: May-September, 2024 / MJ

It’s Friday in Ellös and we had hoped to leave by Sunday for easy-going cruising up to Fredrikstad. When we began filling our water tanks today we found that the water was going into the bilge rather than into the tanks. We have three tanks: the two smaller tanks are empty, and the large main

* Moving Aboard and Preparing to Sail (May 5, 2024)

We moved aboard Hokukea on Friday, May 3, and have spent the weekend unpacking boxes and making the boat habitable (outfitting the galley, buying some food, putting our bedding together, etc.). We still have a few more boxes of boat stuff to unpack and get stowed, and we hope to actually leave the harbor and

What a great birthday present for Adam!…. and also quite a gift for MJ 🙂 We spent the morning reviewing all the interior systems of the boat, went for a late lunch at 1 p.m., and then out for a sail. The winds were brisk, about 20 knots, gusting to 30 knots. We practiced maneuvering

With a long layover in Los Angeles, and then another long layover at London-Heathrow, it took us 30 hrs+ to get to Sweden. But we finally did make it! All of our boxes of boat stuff arrived, and we were lucky enough to get access to a very large cart for moving our boxes to
